Dating to the American Revolution and before, until well after, friction matches became commonplace and awkward methods were abandoned. This example could date as early as 1725 if made in Wales at Pontypool or later, perhaps 1820 if Michigan was the place of original manufacturing. The craft was much the same and difficult to differentiate between toleware tin craft, though it's probable that this is like the variety imported from England by HBC in the late 1700s. Guaranteed to be genuine and original. The piece would once have had a tin lens cover, now long missing. The functional quality of the burning lens is excellent. Seldom offered for sale. A real pioneer owned relic.
