RARE Antique Magic Pocket Lamp Cigar Lighter Pre Flint Boxed Set 1890s Koopman
Absolutely amazing condition 1890s Koopmans pre flint magic pocket lighter outfit with original box. The box includes the fancy engraved lighter, and beautiful round tin box full of igniting disks, and empty glass bottle that had the special oil, and glass filler feeder with squeeze bulb missing as shown. The rare original box features fantastic graphics, original reinforced metal corners, very well made. I did test the lighter, the disk wheel advances properly when the button is pushed, no spark. The lighter appears complete and all original. I don’t think the unused ignition disks in the tin are actually useable, the powder has mostly disintegrated with age, just to have the round tin alone is an incredible find. I included (22) photos, you are getting exactly what you see which is a gorgeous and super rare antique boxed lighter outfit, probably museum quality. The price is fair and reflects its rarity, go ahead and treat yourself, you definitely deserve it. (Condition: Pre-Owned)

A Superb and Excessively Rare Museum Quality Military Mess “Grenade” Style Cigar Lighter in Sterling Silver Fully Swiveling Double-Gimbaled Mounts Black Buck Indian Antelope Trophy Horn Handle Huge Over 18 Inches Long This Unusual Cigar Lighter was Made in Hallmarked Sterling Silver in London in 1903 by Noted Silversmith Joseph Braham. It is in Excellent, Usable Condition This is a superb and excessively rare British Military Mess “Grenade” Style Table Centerpiece Cigar Lighter, with fully swiveling sterling silver double-gimbaled mounts, the handle a trophy horn from a Black Buck Indian antelope. This is a very large imposing example, measuring eighteen inches long. The main “Grenade” style lighter is held by two gimbaled sterling silver rings with fully swiveling mounts. The natural horn handle is a trophy from a Black Buck, or Indian antelope. The twisting ringed horn forms a superbly effective handle providing naturally fitted grips for the hand and fingers. This superb piece was made in the English capital city of London in 1903 in a superior gauge of solid silver. It bears English hallmarks and the maker’s mark of the noted silversmith Joseph Braham who was a pioneer maker of high-class smoking accessories. These Table Cigar Lighters were originally used in British Regimental Military Messes, in a simpler form imitating the grenades of the time of Waterloo. They evolved into a variety of forms, of which this is one of the rarest, with fully gimbaled ring mounts, and the natural horn handle a trophy of the hunt for the antelope known as Black Buck in the Indian sub-continent. AN INTRIGUING CONVERSATION PIECE AND A FINE ADDITION TO A SERIOUS COLLECTION This Military Mess Table Centerpiece Cigar Lighter is of unusually large size, at eighteen inches long (18 ins / 46 cms) and standing about three and a half inches high (3.5 ins / 9.0 cm). It exhibits top quality workmanship in a substantial gauge of silver and has good heft and superb balance. This lighter is in excellent condition, with none of the usual dents and distortions to which these are prone from their early use by hard-drinking men !!! It is not engraved. The piece bears full English hallmarks on the main support and correct partial marks on the inner ring. The hallmarks are the lion passant guarantee mark for English sterling silver, the leopard’s head town mark for London, and the date letter “h” for 1903. The maker’s mark is the initials “J.B” in an oval for Joseph Braham of Gerrard Street, Soho, London. On close examination, the “grenade” is not hallmarked, so I would judge this has been expertly restored and polished at some stage in its century plus life. See John Culme "The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths Jewellers and Allied Traders 1838-1914, Volume I pages 58 and 59 for a description and history of Joseph Braham and his successor firm, where they are noted as pioneers in the field of high class smoking accessories. How does it work ??? The body of the lighter is filled with spirit or lamp oil, and the screw-in nozzle holds a wick inside the body. The wick is lit and the lighter burns gently as a table centerpiece. The horn handle and double-gimbals allow this rare example to be passed around the mess table and used to light the gentlemen’s cigars. Similar formal cigar lighters are still used in Britain at traditional military mess and naval wardroom dinners, and in the finest and most elegant of the London gentlemen’s clubs. Early 1800's Dobereiner's Lamp Tinderbox Original Gas Lighter invention .
Well, you finaly found one ! What is it ? This is a Dobereiner's Lamp The first lighter was invented in 1823 by Johann Wolfgang Dobereiner, and it was called the Dobereiner’s lamp. This lighter had a straightforward mechanism: When zinc metal reacts with sulfuric acid, flammable gas hydrogen is produced, which catches fire when it comes into contact with sparks at the container’s opening.In the diagram above :-a= glass cylinderb= open bottle c wired zince stopcockf nozzleg platinum spongeThese were in production until 1880 The zinc reacts to diluted sulfuric acid and produces hydrogen gas .Valve at top opened to release onto platinum sponge which reacts to the atmosphere , heats the catalyst and ignites the hydrogen . All parts , except for the platinum sponge are still present . It is 10" tall ( max ) An amazing original piece of lighter history . Moorh Syracuse, New York. It is about 10 inches tall including the glass lantern. It is 9.25 inches long. Condition: It has a great patina and it displays well. 7-20-4 seven twenty four cigar lighter kerosene tobacco store or saloon lamp
I’ve owned this for quite a few years and I’ve had many offers to sell it but never had the desire to do that. That includes my father and two brothers who buy and sell things but I just don’t like doing business with friends or family. Never seems to be a great idea. Like many things somebody acquires I always thought I’d collect these but I’ve only seen a few offered for sale on eBay, put in my bid, and they always ended up selling way past my budget. With two twin girls about to enter college I have decided to sell this and another I acquired in the past listed on a separate auction and put the funds to a more practical use. I’m told by collectors and others in the know that these sat on a bar top or on a cigar store counter for customers to light their cigarettes or cigars. The colorful glass font was full of kerosene and went up a wick to a burner inside the globe & to a flame. The two tubes in the front had cotton tipped dips soaked in kerosene and one was removed and put into that flame and then to light the cigarette or cigar. Then extinguished when put back into the tube full of low flammability kerosene which is low in flumes to ignite in the air. According to the others I’ve seen and what I’ve been told, my starting price is much less than the true market value. The make offer is for somebody wanting to make a strong offer and not for somebody to offer less than the starting bid so please don’t do that. I often end my auctions early when I receive a strong offer through the “make offer” option so I suggest if interested, a last second snipe bid is not wise. Saving money on something no longer there is not good for results. LOL. I realize it might be priced past the pay scale of some & I understand. The price of a new Lamborghini is past me so I’ll drive a Ford. If this takes food out of your children’s mouths maybe collect or purchase something more in your price range like possibly like old used rusty bent nails, ashtrays, or match books. Again, please don’t ask me for a charity price less than my starting bid. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
