This listing is for a rare, vintage, authentic Zippo “The Original Windproof Lighter” which is a brushed silver metal body. The outside is imprinted in red, “C.H. Wallerich Co. Chrysler – Plymouth Indianapolis ” The lighter has never been out of its original box. This listing also includes the original manufacturer marketing insert for the lighter. These “Instructions and Initials for Zippo” paper insert includes how to instructions to fill the lighter, change the wick, and changing the flint. The insert also has an offering to get initials and a personalized design on the Zippo. It would cost $1.00 for each – initials, a design, or signature. The original box for the lighter itself has a red lid that is printed on the cover with, “Zippo The Original Windproof Lighter.” The base of the box is black. The lighter is tightly seated in the bottom half of the box and has never been out of the box, to my knowledge. This original box has been stored inside a brown cardboard box. The Zippo box has a tear on one corner. See photos. A bit of history about Wallerich ---- Carl Harrison “C.H.” Wallerich was president of the C.H. Wallerich Company, which he founded in 1921. He was born in 1883. Because this car dealership was located in Indianapolis, there is a long connection by Mr. Wallerich to the Indianapolis 500. In fact, the Sportsmanship Award for the race was commissioned beginning in 1927. Drivers, riding mechanics, crew members, officials and other persons connected to the race were eligible for consideration for this award. During the 1930s the award was called the Carl Wallerich award and a fancy stopwatch was received by the recipient. Please see the photo of Mr. Wallerich in the 1941 Indianapolis 500 pace car, a Chrysler Newport, which was on display in his dealership, prior to the race that year. We did not take the lighter out of the original box, but believe the bottom reads, “Zippo Mfg Co. Bradford, Pa.” The text color is strong. The lighter measures 2 3/16” tall by 1 3/8” wide.
